What is DBDM?
DBDB is a FRAMEWORK, a student-centered process that uses continuous improvement to support all students at all times. IT IS NOT A CURRICULUM or program. Educators use data to provide, and evaluate, the effectiveness of multiple tiers of integrated academic, attendance, behavior and social-emotional instruction and supports. In California. MTSS focuses on CCSS, core instruction, differentiated learning, student-centered learning, individualized student needs, and the alignment of systems necessary for all students’ success. Schools organize resources and build capacity through alignment of academic standards, behavioral expectations, increased engagement and positive culture and climate. When implemented with fidelity and sustained over time, every student is provided the opportunity to achieve and succeed.
DBDM in SCUSD
We are late to the party, but the pandemic has created a sense of urgency and lit a fire in the heart of many of our best educators and leaders. MTSS isn’t reinventing the wheel—it’s simply bringing cohesion to the student-centered practices while de-siloing the data-driven decisions that already happen in many schools and district departments. When implemented effectively, it not only helps us increase the effectiveness of our existing efforts, but it also uncovers areas in which we may need to adjust or increase our efforts.
MTSS helps educators to be thoughtful about using resources appropriately and impactfully, and use data to continually monitor and improve the effectiveness of their actions. MTSS makes the district-wide system more effective and ensures we’re supporting the needs of all of our students either through a strong Tier 1 foundation or that coupled with evidence based interventions from our Tier II and Tier III resources.
every student.
Critical Components of MTSS

Team Based Leadership, Capacity Building Infrastructure, and Communication& Collaboration. There are many other drivers of this work such as progress monitoring and use of evidence-based practices but these five items that without our efforts would be pointless.
