On Thursday, September 6, 2018 SCUSD passed resolution no. 3030 to recognize September as Attendance Awareness Month District-wide.

September is National Attendance Awareness Month! There is no substitution for a student being in his or her seat. Good attendance has a substantial positive effect on a student’s sense of connectedness to school and peers, confidence in themselves and most importantly their academic achievement and ability to meet grade level readiness standards. Conversely, a student who is absent just two or more days per month for ANY reason is considered chronically absent. Research has proven that chronically absent students underperform on 3rd Grade Readiness (most notably in reading proficiency),  Middle School Readiness, and are more likely to drop out of high school before graduation.

We are launching the Be HERE Campaign to bring attendance awareness, best practices, and support to sites to reach our goal of 98% average daily attendance in September as a means to improve academic outcomes for ALL of our students. It is the aim of the Be HERE campaign to support our schools to reduce our district’s chronic absence rate from 15.1% to 10% chronic absence or less during the 2018-19 school year. Our goal is to reduce chronic absence to form a baseline so that all  students are given an equal opportunity to graduate with the greatest number of postsecondary choices from the widest array of options. Please visit BeHereSac.com or contact us in the Be HERE office at 916.643.2136 to learn how we can work together to address chronic absence in our district and community.
